MIMA
Yarimir Cabán Reyes animates the musical figure of MIMA. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, they began their teenage years in the 1990s accompanied by a broken 12-string guitar. They have released two albums: Mima (2005) and El pozo (2011). In Puerto Rico’s cultural and musical scene, MIMA has stood out across generations as a singer-songwriter known for the versatility of their sound, their unique presence, and the powerful transmission of voice and word.
La máquina patinaba, Ñam-ñam, El arca de Mima, Bachaqué, and Fuego form part of a songbook developed outside of their first two full-length productions, drawing on the textures of plena, reggae, jíbaro popular music, bachata, and dub.
In 2016, Yarimir joined the debut of the Caribbean electronic group ÌFÉ, led by artist and producer Otura Mun, with whom they collaborated closely for over a decade. They have also worked extensively with Rita Indiana, Macha Colón, Kairiana Núñez Santaliz, Ivette Román, Amed Irizarry, Alegría Rampante, Bayamonster, Omar Silva, Eduardo Cabra, Villano Antillano, King Javius, and International Dub Ambassadors, the latter being the group with which MIMA currently reinterprets their repertoire through the lenses of dub and reggae.
